Hang 20 position report July 12 0800PST

Position 28 39' n 134 19' w

We had to turn the rocket ship back into a sailboat for a while yesterday, as winds got light and we wanted to stay high to avoid what looked like it is a massive hole below us. Even so, hit a dead calm for a few minutes in the middle of the night. We're pretty exhausted after battery and solar troubleshooting took away many hours of sleep for the past two days or so. We are in good spirits despite being pretty tired, and are trying to catch up on sleep now.

We've resigned ourselves at this point to collecting the teeny tiny trickle of power coming in through the solar panels that seem to be intact, and conserving that power so we can continue to communicate and get weather. At night, we have rigged a white-light headlamp covered with blue duct tape to one of our compasses, so we have some idea what direction we are pointing. The bright moon was incredibly helpful last night. Even when the clouds filled in, the sky was bright enough to see the sails.

The boat is working well except the electrical system. We brought about 3x as much food on board as we'll eat. I guess that means we probably have about 4x what we need left over at this point! We also brought more than ample water, so we are not concerned about those necessities. AIS would be welcome at night, but we haven't seen another vessel in days. We are very happy to have brought backup devices, especially handheld GPS and battery-operated and USCG-approved nav lights. We did have a magnificent sunset last night, worth writing home to mom about, and another rainbow this morning.

Sailing with the #1 right now, using what little charge we have to get 1 battery in good shape for nav lights and ais when we get close to the islands. possibly found the issue with solar panels, still working on it.
