July 16

Hang 20 position report 0800 PST July 16
25°39N 144°26W

The wind arrived! Last night, while Lori unsuccessfully attempted to sleep, I transcended time and space, hurtling this specimen of fine art straight into the black abyss, sans wind instruments or compass. She thinks I must have hit over 20 bsp but we have no way to know.

Did you know that when you double-hand, there is only ever just ONE other person on the boat?

Last night was terrifying. We are working on a smaller sail configuration.  Got a reef in the main now.

Iridium back off. More tomorrow!

  1. Dear Lori Tewksbury
I'm contacting you on behalf of GOSEA, the multi-institutional team of scientists and environmentalists, led by the University of Hawaii and supported by NASA Citizen Science for Earth Systems Program.

We are oceanographers, marine biologists, satellite experts and ocean operators working to advance understanding of the complex marine systems.

On your voyages, you visit places that are out of reach of most people and witness phenomena that are in focus of our cutting-edge research and hard to capture with most observing systems. We invite you to join our team and help to document changes in the ocean and processes behind these changes.

Examples of tasks include but are not limited to:
    - visual observations and records of the sea state, marine life, and debris
    - surveys of oceanic fronts and slick
    - collecting samples of sea water, neuston, and plastic
    - tagging large floating debris with GPS trackers
    - inspecting previously deployed equipment
    - ground-truthing satellites by making observations during their flybys.

We value your time and we will work with you to align potential tasks with your own plans as well as provide all necessary supplies, protocols, and training. No past experience is necessary.

Please, also spread the word to your friends or let us know how to reach them.

    With best regards,

  2. Cathy you are amazing and I’m sure Lori is too! What a ride to follow you on this race. Hang in there with your electronics issues. Hawaii is not far now!
